I am a radical.
I believe in a Jewish carpenter with dark skin and rough hands who lived a radical life and challenged the political and religious leaders of the day. I believe he upended physical and metaphorical tables and broke down the traditional walls around race, religion, gender and socio-economic status. I believe he loves the people in this world so much that he was willing to make himself one of us - to experience all of what it means to be human, including the painful, dirty, beautiful mess of it all.
I believe he gave all of himself to bring life to a dying world and that he charged us with doing the same. I believe he loves the poor, the sick, the criminals, the saints, the broken, the powerful, the least and the best. I believe he saw the best in the least and commanded us to do the same. I believe that there is absolutely nothing that can separate us from his love.
My Jesus knows the value of Story. He knows the value of people. He is the Lion and the Lamb. He is the Word made flesh. He is Counselor, Almighty, Everlasting. He is a strong tower, a shelter, a conqueror and a king. He is also healer, helper, and shepherd of souls. He is glorified and reviled. He is praised and rejected. He is lifted up and crucified. He was abandoned and betrayed, but he will never abandon or betray us.
Even when it feels like it. There are lots of moments in my life where it feels as though I have been abandoned. Those moments have built my faith in a radical Jesus.
I am a radical.
I am a healer too - not of bodies, but of minds and hearts. I hope to be driven always by radical compassion. I am learning that radical compassion for others requires radical compassion for self. I am learning that filling others up requires that I fill myself first, or there will be nothing to give. I am also learning that the more I stand up for myself, the more I want to stand for others.
I have lots of things to say about lots of things, and sometimes I will say them. Words have power and putting those words into the world is a powerful, exciting, and sometimes dangerous thing.
Seek Justice. Love Mercy. Walk Humbly.
